Aladdin Services safely and effectively cleans asphalt and cedar roofing. Cleaning your roof can turn an unsightly roof back to its original luster and extend the lifespan of your significant investment.
Typically on asphalt roofs you will see black streaks on your roof. These streaks indicate the presence of a type of bacteria called gleocapsa magma. It is similar to algae and is very unsightly. Eventually you will see other forms of growth on your roof such as fungus, mold, moss and lichen. All of these retain moisture and cause damage to your roof.
Companies like Owens Corning, GAF, and the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) recommend a low pressure detergent application followed by a low pressure rinse. GAF recommends cleaning the roof with a special mixture. That mixture is: 4 gallons of water, 1 gallon of bleach and 1 cup of TSP (Tri-Sodium Phosphate – or acceptable phosphate-free substitute) found at many home centers. Apply this mixture with a garden sprayer, let sit on the roof surface for up to 20 minutes, and rinse with low-pressure water. We use the cleaners and methods recommended by these companies, for safe and damage-free roof cleaning. If your shingles are still in good shape but have bacteria, algae, mold, mildew, moss or lichen, our gentle roof washing will leave your roof looking like new for years.
Cedar roofs have natural preservatives that protect the shingles from shrinking, splitting and cracking. These natural preservatives diminish over time. Cleaning the roof to remove any mildew, moss, lichen and algae is most important in maximizing the life of your roof. Using low pressure, a detergent is applied to help lift the contaminants and then a mild pressure rinse is applied to remove the contaminants, leaving the wood ready to be preserved.
Preserving the roof after cleaning replaces the natural oils lost over time due to UV rays and weather. After the roof is thoroughly dry, a preservative such as TWP Shake and Shingle is applied by spray and brush. These products soak into the wood, protecting it from the sun and moisture and help inhibit the growth of mildew, moss and lichen. Because these products soak into the wood they do not crack or peel and give you years of protection.
